WHAT ARE THE IMPACTS OF THE TERRITORIALIZATION OF RIGHTS VIOLATIONS?

Maré has been experiencing, since Friday afternoon (July 16 th , 2021), a police operation that violates rights and leaves residents of Parque União, Rubens Vaz, and Nova Holanda under tension within their own homes.

According to a statement from PMERJ (Military Police of Rio de Janeiro), the action, which has been going on for more than 19 hours in Parque União, a favela with more than 20,000 residents, is aimed at preventing the unauthorized occupation of CIEP César Perneta. However, according to the testimonies received by Redes da Maré team, which monitors operations in the field and also provides support to residents, the operation went beyond the school walls and violated various rights of this community: home invasions, vandalism of vehicles, children and professionals trapped inside daycares and NGOs, and the denial of the right to move freely within their own territory, in addition to the constant feeling of fear and apprehension about the next event, including throughout the night when the police remained in the territory.

It is unacceptable for society to normalize, not be shocked, and not mobilize against the violence, violations, and excesses of police actions in the favelas of Rio. We demand from the State a position on the action that neglects the determinations of the Federal Supreme Court, through the Favelas ADPF, and normalizes the disregard for various constitutional rights of the citizens of Maré.

At this moment, our team continues to monitor in the field, with on-call assistance to receive reports of violence during the operation, at the headquarters of Redes da Maré, in the central building of Nova Holanda, at Rua Sargento Silva Nunes, 1012, and in Parque União, at Casa das Mulheres da Maré, at Rua da Paz, 42, and also online via WhatsApp (21) 99924-6462.
