FACILITY

In 2005, the Lima Barreto Popular Library was created to meet the demand of young people and adults in Maré for a place where they could read and study. To further expand the space's performance, the Maria Clara Machado Reading Room was opened in 2011 for children.

The project invites children and their family members to living with books and reading; contributes to the formation of new readers; it provides experiences of creation and expression processes through reading and writing, promoting a safe learning space.

In this trajectory of more than 15 years, the Library has worked in partnership with local institutions such as Residents' Associations, Early Childhood Education Spaces (EDI) and NGOs, strengthening education development networks in Maré.

The numbers prove how the Library is a reference in the region:

It has an annual average of 12,000 services to children and adults, between Loans and Consultations from a collection of 14,000 books, CDs, DVDs and participation in activities.

The Library is a place of meeting, knowledge and above all, hospitable!

The young room is a meeting point for people preparing for high school and college entrance exams. A concentrated group that usually exchanges experiences and teachings, with a favorable environment, where there are textbooks, silence, wi-fi and air conditioning.

In the children's room, with 300 square meters, there is always a facilitator to interact with children, storytelling, workshops, material for drawing, painting, and a variety of games. Both the construction and maintenance of the Lima Barreto Popular Library and Maria Clara Machado Room depended on contributions. Donations of literature and poetry books for all ages are accepted. HOW DO WE FACE THE PANDEMIC?

As of March 2020, the Library was closed to the public but, with the help of partners, we created strategies to strengthen bonds, despite the social isolation imposed by the pandemic, encouraging the habit of reading, which today occupies a smaller place in people's lives.

Thus, we created the Reading Club, meetings that happen weekly, in a virtual way, with children who attend the Library. The creation of this project arose after the demand they brought, the longing they felt for the activities and the contact with the Library team.

Favoring children's protagonism, the actions of the Reading Club are designed and developed based on the wishes and interests of children. Learn more by watching the video below.
