PROJECT

VACINA MARÉ CAMPAING

Led by the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation (Fiocruz), in partnership with Redes da Maré and the City of Rio de Janeiro, the study is part of a global research initiative on vaccine effectiveness, disease variants, and post-COVID conditions. Approximately 6,500 residents of Maré have taken part in the research and are being monitored and followed by healthcare professionals.

VACINA MARÉ RESEARCH

As a starting point of the Maré Vaccine Research, an unprecedented mass vaccination action against covid-19 was carried out in 2021 in the 15 favelas of Maré, in partnership with Fiocruz, the Municipal Health Department, and Redes da Maré. The campaign immunized around 36,000 residents over 18 years of age with the first dose of the vaccine in just four days. Two months later, a task force for the second dose was carried out, contributing decisively so that a high percentage of adult residents of Maré, 93.4%, were vaccinated with at least two doses.

STUDIES

1. VACCINE EFFECTIVENESS AND NEW VARIANTS

Conducted in 2021, the study sought to identify the effectiveness of the AstraZeneca vaccine in reducing Covid-19 infection in Maré. Between January and November, 2,393 people vaccinated with at least one dose and 7,684 unvaccinated people were tested (10,077 in total).

Those vaccinated with the first dose developed 31.6% protection against Covid-19 after 21 days of immunization and 65.1% protection after 14 days of immunization with two doses.

The study now seeks to identify protection levels against new variants and the effectiveness of the vaccine, considering booster doses.

2. COHORT STUDIES WITH FAMILIES FROM MARÉ

Until the end of 2023, Maré residents were monitored to assess the proportion of infected individuals among vaccinated and unvaccinated people (seroprevalence). The study is long-term, and a field team – mostly made up of Maré residents – monitors the participants.

In addition to monitoring Covid-19 in the territory (infection and protection levels), the study collects important information about the health of part of the Maré population (cross-referencing with other diseases, comorbidities, mental health, and patterns of use of primary care services, among others).

3. POST-COVID CONSEQUENCES (LONG COVID)

Based on questionnaires applied to residents who tested positive for Covid-19, the study evaluates possible consequences – both physical and mental health – for people who developed the disease.

Frequency of Long Covid (a disease already recognized and classified by the World Health Organization), main symptoms, risk factors, and impact on quality of life are some of the characteristics evaluated by the study, which is conducted among vaccinated and unvaccinated individuals.

4. VACCINATION SURVEY – STUDY ON CHILD AND ADOLESCENT VACCINATION IN MARÉ

In 2024, 868 families were interviewed with the objective of expanding knowledge about vaccination coverage among children and adolescents in the Maré territory, contributing to a broader view of local public health.

The research included home visits to randomly selected addresses, during which questionnaires were administered addressing both vaccination status and the families’ socioeconomic situation, recognizing the importance of social and economic factors in access to healthcare.
