Education is at the heart of Redes da Maré. Its founders’ creation of a community Pre- College Course in Maré, in 1997, was one of Redes da Maré’s first landmarks in the fight for residents’ rights, and has already helped over 1,200 Maré residents gain access to public universities such as UERJ, UFRJ, and UFF.

The Education axis aims, through its multiple projects, to contribute to better structural conditions for access to quality education for Maré residents, to impact the increase of educational rates at all levels, to articulate and mobilize institutions and residents for the improvement of the quality of teaching and the structure of public schools in the 15 Favelas of Maré.

There are over 12 projects under the Education axis that enable the attendance of different audiences, age groups, and interests of Maré residents, prioritizing critical reflection and assisting students in understanding reality based on their experiences in the territory, broadening access to employment, and seeing themselves as citizens with rights.

There are courses in Pedagogical Complementation for children, professionalization of young people in the technological area, youth and adult education, literacy for women, preparatory courses for high school and university, among others, that contribute to the integral development of students.
