PROJECT

The Training Program for Popular Health Educator Agents (AgPopSUS) is an initiative of the Brazilian Ministry of Health, anchored in the National Policy on Popular Education in Health (PNEPS-SUS), which aims to train community leaders to defend the Unified Health System (SUS), strengthen social participation, and promote health in the territories. Based on popular education and social movements, the program’s objective is to increase popular protagonism and combat misinformation.

The formation of the class of Popular Health Agents, carried out by Redes da Maré in partnership with the program, directly dialogues with the territory’s historic struggle to guarantee the right to health. In addition, it reaffirms the importance of creating and strengthening spaces for dialogue and collective training for residents.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

In Maré, the project began in March 2025 and continued until November of the same year, training 15 residents of the territory. Throughout the classes, participants studied topics such as Public Health in Maré; Popular Education and the role of the Popular Health Education Agent; Territory, communication, environment, and popular surveillance; SUS and popular care practices; Food sovereignty, agrochemicals, and the fight against hunger.

The expectation for the course is that, based on the knowledge acquired, the agents can support the SUS in the favelas where they live, combating misinformation and promoting initiatives that expand and qualify access to health in the territory.
