This experience was responsible for a rich production of data and monitoring of the pandemic in Maré. With the systematization of this information, it was possible to propose, in 2021, a large mass vaccination campaign for Maré residents combined with the beginning of research on the vaccine, called Vacina Maré.
The action made it possible to anticipate the official vaccination schedule. In just four days, 36,000 people received the first dose. Two months later, a joint effort was carried out for the second dose, contributing decisively to a high percentage of Maré’s adult residents, 93.4%, being vaccinated with at least two doses.
Following this action, Vacina Maré research was developed and, over four years, was structured into different fronts, including studies on vaccine effectiveness, disease variants, post-Covid sequelae, and a vaccination survey with children and adolescents.
In 2022, with the creation of the Right to Health axis, the projects initiated during the pandemic, focused on health, food security, and research, were maintained. In addition, other themes, such as mental health and health promotion actions, began to be developed under the umbrella of the new axis, integrating with other already existing projects with intersections in the health area.
