In addition to practical classes, participants also have access to complementary training in gender and citizenship, addressing topics such as women’s rights, the history of favelas, and the rights of people living in these territories, contributing to the strengthening of identity and the struggle for social justice.
The project also includes a professional guidance component, offering support in résumé preparation, reintegration into the job market, and the development of marketing strategies for those who choose to become entrepreneurs. Maré of Beauties not only provides professional skills but also enhances the transformative role of women in Maré, connecting technical training, critical awareness, and the strengthening of both individual and collective paths.
Questioning and deconstructing beauty standards imposed by society, widely disseminated and based on an elitist gaze that idealizes women, is one of the objectives of Maré of Beauties. It is also a response to the second largest economic sector in Maré of Beauties and aesthetics, which is mostly led and consumed by the women of the territory. The course applies L'Oréal’s training methodology for beauty salon assistants, combined with classes on gender and society, socio-legal support, and psychological care for the students.
